BRUSSELS – Recycled polyester from plastic bottles is not in line with circular economy principles – this is the claim of a joint NGO-industry letter to the European Parliament. The letter has been signed by UNESDA, Natural Mineral Waters Europe, the European Fruit Juice Association (AIJN), Changing Markets Foundation, Minderoo, Zero Waste Europe, and Reloop.
The letter focuses on the issue of using plastic bottles to produce recycled polyester, a process which the signatories claim is effectively downcycling. It claims this is bad for the environment as these bottles are being taken out of an existing closed loop in the food and beverages industries.
