WASHINGTON – More than 50 independent experts in international law, genocide, China’s ethnic policies, and the Xinjiang region have concluded that the People’s Republic of China “bears state responsibility for committing ongoing genocide against the Uyghurs, in direct breach of the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.” China is a party to this convention, along with 151 other states.

The experts have put their weight behind a highly detailed new report which has arrived at an unequivocal genocide determination based on international law and the only relevant binding treaty – the Genocide Convention – applied to the available evidence.

The publication of the findings further raises the heat on brands to eradicate all sourcing ties with Xinjiang – a task which is easier said than done given the Chinese province’s deep-rooted links with global textile supply chains.
