WAKEFIELD – Leading apparel brands are demanding discounts of up to 50 per cent on completed orders as parts of the global apparel supply chain take on a Wild West feel amid chaos brought on by Covid-19. In some cases, brands are using rank opportunism and ‘take it or leave it’ tactics with suppliers to get them to part with orders on terms vastly different to those previously agreed. “We are now having to make hard decisions in order to protect our business and ensure we can continue into the future,” US retailer, Meijer told one supplier. “In this case I am afraid it is either 50 per cent discount or outright cancellation.”

Danish brand Bestseller and Italian luxury brand Guess have adopted similar, mercenary tactics with beleaguered suppliers.
