STOCKHOLM – H&M is among a group of organisations to sign up to a US$48.6m deal with Stockholm Exergi to facilitate a carbon removal retrofit on a biomass-fuelled district heating facility. The agreement is said to be the first large-scale European deal for carbon removal participants. Swedish fashion brands H&M and other companies will purchase the facility’s removal output from 2028 to 2030.
The retrofit project aims to remove 800,000 tons of CO₂ each year, starting in 2028. The volume and price per ton will be determined through a competitive reverse auction conducted by the Swedish government, with results announced once finalized.
