GUJARAT – The Indian government has announced it will set up two ‘mega’ textile parks in Gujarat, on the western coast of the country, to enable forward and backward integration in the sector. The plans were announced while the state budget was presented this week. The parks will be set up as part of a broader strategy of establishing seven such parks with the aim of making the industry more globally competitive.

India appears to be adopting a cluster approach in its textile industry, by developing hotbed areas of textile production in particular regions or cities which include full vertical integration and offer turnkey solutions for customers. Uzbekistan is adopting a similar approach and has invested hundreds of millions in its textile sector infrastructure in the past five years (more on that in our next issue).
