PARIS – French prosecutors have opened an investigation against fashion retailers Uniqlo, Zara owner Inditex, French company SMCP and US footwear brand Skechers for allegedly concealing “crimes against humanity” in China’s Xinjiang region.
The investigation comes on the back of a compliant which was filed in April by Collectif Ethique Sur L’étiquette – a French partner of the Clean Clothes Campaign – anti-corruption group Sherpab and the Uyghur Institute of Europe.
The complaint claimed to show the existence of commercial links between fashion with several economic entities in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, where the population is subjected to forced labour.
