ESPOO – Forest industry group Metsä has announced a project with the Finnish state-owned energy company Fortum to develop new technologies to convert straw and wood pulp fibre into new bioproducts including textile fibres. The four-year research programme is backed by €20m grant from the Finnish government and will be called ExpandFibre.
The partners say they aim to provide a select number of markets with high-volume bio-products that have a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to fossil-based alternatives.
