HONG KONG – Esquel Group, one of the apparel suppliers at the centre of new calls to boycott apparel and textiles from Xinjiang, is seeking to overturn US sanctions on one of its Xinjiang plants, Changji Esquel Textile Co. The business is massively exposed to the US’s ongoing trade war with China, and its problems have this week been compounded by calls from 180 civil society organisations for apparel brands to cut all sourcing ties with the Uyghur region of China (XUAR).
Shipping records obtained by the Financial Times show one of Esquel’s companies dispatched large orders to Western brands including Hugo Boss, Ralph Lauren, Brooks Brothers and Lacoste in the past month.
