BRUSSELS – EU chemicals legislation, including the regulation of hazardous chemicals found in clothing, is dictated by economic interests rather than whether chemicals present a risk to the planet or humans. Researchers crunched numbers and other information around which EU states propose which chemicals to the EU Candidate List – a key step to move industry away from hazardous chemicals in products and processes. A chemical needs to go through several steps to end up on the list, including evaluating committees and public consultations.
They found that if member states stand to lose money by the regulation of certain chemicals, these substances are less likely to be passed through the legal bodies of the EU.
