PARIS – Global specialty materials company Eastman will invest up to US$1bn in a material-to-material chemical recycling facility in France. French President Emmanuel Macron and Mark Costa, board chair and CEO of Eastman, jointly announced the news. The facility will use Eastman’s polyester recycling technology, Methanolysis, to annually recycle up to 160,000 metric tonnes of hard-to-recycle plastic waste, much of which is currently being incinerated.

Eastman told Apparel Insider the business is currently in discussions with several potential partners to secure a variety of hard-to-recycle polyester feedstocks from various sources that will include mixed PET, coloured PET, films and textiles. “We’re early in the process and are executing this phase in parallel with site selection, so we’ll provide updates on feedstocks as the project progresses,” a spokesperson said.
