LONDON – The carbon footprint of crude oil derived synthetic fibres such as polyester could be higher than previously assumed by tools such as the Higg Index after updates to datasets which underpin many European LCA’s. The Swiss ecoinvent database will now include unintended methane emissions during the extraction and processing of oil and natural gas among other updates. The GaBi tool – used by the Higg Index for its notorious MSI tool – is also making changes to its datasets to better reflect the CO2 impacts of oil-derived products.
