COPENHAGEN – Danish fashion retailer, Bestseller, has committed to sourcing 6,000 metric tonnes of organic cotton from direct-to-farm agreements in India over the next year. The figure represents a 445 per cent increase in the previous year – Bestseller sourced 1,100mt in the full year for 2020/21.
Bestseller said this new amount will be enough to produce 19 million T-shirts.
The news represents a vindication of Bestseller’s direct-to-farm model in India, especially given the ongoing state of flux in the global cotton market. Cotton prices have reached record highs in recent months as producers have struggled to move their stocks around the world. There is also an excess of demand over supply for organic cotton at the moment, forcing prices upwards.
