DHAKA – Ready-made garment (RMG) factories in Bangladesh are now running at just 55 per cent capacity, the country’s lead trade body has warned. The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) says the apparel sector in Bangladesh may lose as much as US$5m in orders in the outgoing 2019-20 fiscal year due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic and that the industry will likely undergo significant job losses.

“Global consumption of clothes is expected to fall by 65 per cent and our work orders will also slump by 30 per cent, which means export earnings will take a hit,” BGMEA president, Rubana Huq told local media this week.
