DHAKA – There was some concern among unions and civil rights groups when it was announced that the Bangladesh Accord had signed an MoU last summer with the BGMEA to transition its work to Bangladesh’s own RMG Sustainability Council. However, the final agreement and details of this transition were released this week and will perhaps go some way to allaying fears that the new body would be a watered-down version of the Accord. From what we can see, the RSC will more or less be carrying out the same functions of the Accord and appears to have the required level of independence to take that organisation’s work forward without interference from government and vested industry interests. It’s the Bangladesh Accord in all but name.
